5 ways to add retro style in the home

If retro style is your thing, and you can’t resist anything from the seventies (or fifties, or sixties…), then a retro home would be right up your street! There’s something intrinsically stylish about the retro look when it’s done right and it doesn’t have to mean totally redecorating or spending a fortune. In fact, there are a few smaller things you can do to bring retro style into the home:
1. Add bold retro prints
If you have the budget (and time) to add some retro wallpaper, then great – go do it! But, if not, you don’t have to miss out. Try framing some retro printed fabric or a retro printable. Have it as big as you like so that it can really influence the room with its retro aura. Add another pop of bright pattern with retro blinds. A roller can really help to introduce a style without completely transforming a room.
2. Include plenty of orange and brown
There’s no colour combination more traditionally retro than that old classic of orange and brown. If you have a fairly neutral room you can add to, invest in a bold orange chair or brown and orange cushions for that retro feel. A Roman retro blind featuring a pattern, or even just a block of colour can really help bring this feel to any room.
3. Get the textures right
Retro décor was all about smooth plastics, shag carpets, and crushed velvet. By including these in your home as much as possible, you’ll instantly add some retro style. Go for an orange plastic chair or a purple velvet throw – retro chic in a jiffy!
4. Go for tassled lighting
Tassles were all the rage when it came to lighting, and your home should be no different. Tassled shades give a hint of retro without costing a bomb, as do square-shaped shades. Plus, they give just the right ambience for a retro home.
5. Add some vintage accessories
There’s nothing more retro than an old seventies’ radio or a bunch of old vinyl records, is there? Investing in these vintage items will add authenticity, as well as some real interest. Plus, you might just enjoy them on a practical level.
