6 Home Decor Tips

We all want to get it ‘right’ when it comes to decorating our homes, but what if there is no right and wrong when it comes to home décor? There is really only ‘right for you’, so do things just the way you want to. Want to plonk a vintage oak table in the middle of your modern apartment? Do it. Want to adorn your home with pictures of cats from floor to ceiling? No judgement here. It’s your home, so you should decorate it however you like! That said, if you’re really not sure what you want, or don’t know where to start, there are a few simple décor tips you can follow:

1. Avoid overcrowding

Allow a little space around each piece of furniture, as stuffing it all together can make a room feel a little, well, stuffed. And most of us prefer space, right? If that means one less piece of furniture in a room, then so be it. That’s less to buy, after all!

2. Use a focal point

Every room needs a feature that instantly draws your eye as you enter it. This helps a room to feel more ordered and less confusing. Your focal point can be whatever you like – an ornate fireplace, a well-dressed bed, a large window, a bold feature wall. There are plenty of options!

3. Make it personal

A home should feel like a home – your home. So fill it with things that are personal to you, such as your photographs, your souvenirs, and your family heirlooms. Don’t exclude things you’re fond of just because you’re not sure it ‘fits’. If you love it, it belongs there.

4. Use multiple lights

An overhead light can sometimes feel stark. Lamps often don’t give enough light. Wall lights aren’t enough on their own. By using multiple kinds of lights in a room, you give yourself options plus, when all lit together, they can create a gorgeously dramatic effect.

5. Go for odd numbers

When you’re grouping ornaments or pictures, stick to odd-numbered groups. Even-numbered groups don’t draw the eye nearly as much, while odd numbers are much more appealing.

5. Avoid strict themes

Having a rigid theme for a room can be tempting, especially if you’ve fallen in love with a certain look. But clinging on to the ‘rustic’ look too hard will backfire the second you want to add something that doesn’t strictly ‘match’. Have the theme, sure, but be flexible with it. This is your home after all, not a show home.
