3 Ways to Upgrade a Chest of Drawers

We all have the odd piece of furniture we’d love to replace or renew, but we’re not always sure how to go about it and we might not have the money to spend. A chest of drawers is actually a pretty simple item to upgrade or upcycle and you can be as subtle or as drastic as you like. After all, you might quite like the item but just want a little change of scenery! Here are three great ways to upgrade your chest of drawers:

1. Paint

Painting a chest of drawers is probably one of the most drastic ways of giving it a makeover! After all, you’re radically changing the colour. However, it’s not as much hard work as you might think. By choosing chalk paint, you can paint almost any surface, whether metal, wood, or laminate, without much sanding or prep beforehand – of course, always check the instructions that come with your individual paint. You might want to use some wax or similar to finish or seal the paint.

2. Stencils

Stencilling is a quirky method of upgrading furniture and it’s also a lot of fun! You might find it takes a little more skill and effort than painting but the results can be stunning. You can easily buy stencils online or you can get (even more) creative and make your own using card. Remember to line everything up properly to help you to achieve as professional a look as possible. And be sure to choose the appropriate paints. Other than that, the sky’s the limit!

3. Handles

New handles can make a subtle yet effective change to a chest of drawers or they can be part of a bigger makeover, accompanied by painting or stencilling the chest. Adding or replacing the handles is both fun and easy – after all, you get to shop for something attractive yet relatively inexpensive, and the hard work revolves around drilling a hole or two, at the most! If your chest already has handles, you might find it easiest to stick to new handles with the same number of screws. Of course, if it doesn’t, you can do what you like!
