If there’s one style that’s in fashion and truly homely right now, it has to be farmhouse. By taking the rustic and vintage touches that we all know and love and then softening with a certain homely charm, farmhouse invites you to put your feet up, from the moment you walk through the door.

A twin to this trend is also the cottage-core style, think homey prints, soft summer clothing and simple living.  A direct anti-movement in response to excess lifestyle and cold, sparse styles, cottage core continues to be a focus in fashion & personal aesthetic.

All you have to do now is ask the key questions that will allow your new style to come to life before your very eyes…

What does farmhouse window decor actually look like?

Built in usually stone cottages and buildings, the main look in you see in farmhouses is the simple, yet cosy look.  This is mainly due to practical purposes, blankets and layering anywhere the cold came in, but also keeping things tidy and clean.

Farmhouses were usually found miles outside of major towns, with very little neighbouring houses other than perhaps a small village a few miles away.  Because of this, many farms had to use the materials available to them, of course they could get wool from sheep and various other textiles when they reached market. There were also local traditional weavers would make curtains to help keep out the cold and wet.

Covering the windows and doors of the dwelling became a must, especially in the winter months.  Many people also fashioned blinds from local materials, with Roman blinds coming into fashion during the colonial and Victorian era for the weather farmers.

What are my farmhouse bedroom window options?

We’ve picked another classic fabric here, and one which is arich tartan that’s sure to get you thinking when it comes to deciding your matching options.  Classic tartan prints come from the very coldest and wettest areas of the UK, such as the Scottish highlands, Falkirk, islands like Shetland, and the Outer Hebrides.

Based on traditional hand-woven designs handed down over the decades, tartan prints are made from wool or wool-like woven fabric, and date back as early as the 4th Century AD.  Creating a striped pattern which crosses over each other to create a plaid pattern, tartan clothing were a way for the early Scottish clans to identify each other.  Today they are still seen in traditional wear, as accents on war uniforms and of course kilts.  Popularity has also meant that this pattern has found its way into home upholstery, from cushions, blankets and of course blinds and curtains!

It’s what homely touches are all about, after all!  Layer up with tartan curtains to help create a cohesive, cosy look to the space.

Any ideas when it comes to farmhouse kitchen window treatments?

A set of country styled printed blinds can really work wonders in a farmhouse kitchen.  Flex your interior design skills with a selection from our animal-based Roman blinds, featuring birds, owls and British wildlife, and bring a bit of nature into your living space.

Opting something more modern with a patterned roller blind, with various aspirational pieces available, such as fun florals, delicate ditsy prints and bolder styled prints, all made to make your space the best possible fit for your style.

Something a simple and understated, like a simple neutral blind, can create a cosy look in the home. If you want something a little more relaxed and minimalist, opt for soothing, warm colours like the gentle cream to create a pleasant look throughout the seasons.

Just make sure you're happy that the blind sits in the right place, especially giving thought to kitchen sinks and your movements within the busy area.  Kitchens vary in size from the very small, to larger open-plan styles, give thought to the overall feel of the space and what natural light you have.  All of these factors will work to ensure you end up with the perfect kitchen blind.

Is there such as thing as a farmhouse bathroom window coverings?

The good news is there’s no shortage of options. Venetian blinds in light tones are ideal when you want the perfect combination of style and function, and they’re easier to fit than you might think.

Of course, we also have waterproof and water-resistant roller blinds, which are a fantastic option and feature a wide array of designs and shades.

Faux wooden blinds are also a fantastic choice for bathrooms and kitchens, as the slats are waterproof and flame retardant (mind the strings through).

Because we talk you through the measuring and fitting in seconds, all you have to do is send the details to us, and we’ll put the finishing touches to your own little farmhouse-style island of calm.

What about something a bit more modern?

We get it — You may not want total 'rustic charm'.  You may have modernised, live in a converted building or just want to take a little bit of style from the 'farmhouse' look.

The good news is that there are plenty of options out there.  You just need to decide your style base — Are you matching to a particular colour or theme?  Do you feel the room looks great in summer but requires a bit more warmth in the winter?  Perhaps you just need a quick splash of colour to liven things up?

Your room and your space should be a reflection of your personal taste and style, so have fun with it.

One last thing…

Now that you’ve focused on all the key spaces in the home, you can really turn your attention to the one place you’ll spend the most time: the living room. A farmhouse living room will take inspiration from all your other spaces, but it’ll also have a whole host of other trinkets and ornaments that provide inspiring finishing touches. A few country style prints can create a feature wall, some cracked leather or a jute rug can add authenticity, and an eclectic approach to displaying your ornaments will really add the final homely touch.

If in doubt, send off for your samples and then sit back and shop while we put your window treatments together. We can’t say fairer than that!
