TIPS

Posted 19/03/2025

For completely blocking out light, ultra blackout blinds are the ultimate game-changer. Unlike standard blackout blinds, ultra blackout blinds come with a honeycomb pleated fabric and a fully enclosed frame that stops light from sneaking in at the sides, top, or bottom for total darkness, better insulation, and a more energy-efficient home. At 247 Blinds, our Ultra Blackout blinds come in a range of styles to suit any space, so you can enjoy uninterrupted sleep, movie nights, or daytime naps in complete comfort.

What are Ultra Blackout Blinds?

Ultra Blackout blinds take darkness to the next level. Unlike standard blackout blinds, which can let in light around the edges, these feature a fully enclosed frame that fits snugly in your window recess. That means no annoying morning rays, no street lights shining through, just pure, undisturbed darkness. They also come with a honeycomb pleated fabric which means you get the added comfort of extra insulation for the hotter or cooler months.

Key features of our ultra blackout blinds include:

  • Honeycomb pleated blackout fabric – Blocks out light while trapping air for extra insulation.
  • Full-frame design – Prevents light leakage from all sides, plus optional foam side strips for a flawless seal.
  • Cordless, tensioned controls – Child-safe by design, no dangling cords.

Perfect for bedrooms, nurseries, home cinemas, and shift workers, ultra blackout blinds are especially useful in the summer months for better sleep during early mornings.

What's the difference between Ultra Blackout Blinds and standard Blackout Blinds?

Standard blackout blinds – like rollers, Romans, or blackout curtains – do a great job of reducing light coming into a room, but as standard with most blinds, tiny slithers of light can find their way through.

Ultra Blackout Blinds solve this problem with:

  • An enclosed full-frame system that blocks light from all angles.
  • Additional foam strips to fill in any tiny gaps.
  • Energy-efficient honeycomb pleats that also help regulate room temperature and reduce noise.

If you want absolute darkness, better sleep and insulation, Ultra Blackout Blinds are the way to go.

How do Ultra Blackout blinds work?

It’s all in the design! Ultra Blackout blinds combine smart engineering with stylish functionality:

  • A pleated thermal blackout fabric sits on a tensioned internal cord system inside a fully enclosed frame, ensuring a taut and seamless finish for effective blackout.
  • The snug-fitting frame completely seals off your window recess, preventing light leaks.
  • Foam side strips are included to sit behind the frame and cover any small gaps if your window recess isn’t perfectly square, ensuring a complete light seal and enhancing insulation.
  • A bottom bar with a soft brush edge further prevents light from creeping in from below and ensures a smooth, friction-free movement when adjusting the blind.
  • The honeycomb pleats trap air, creating an insulating layer that helps keep rooms cool in summer and warm in winter, reducing the need for extra heating or cooling.
  • The cordless, push-pull operation offers a sleek and minimalist look while being completely child-safe, with no loose cords or chains to worry about.

Can Ultra Blackout blinds be fitted anywhere?

Ultra Blackout blinds are perfect for bedrooms, nurseries or home cinemas where total darkness is a must. However, make sure to check they'll fit perfectly for your window:

  • They’re designed for inside recess fitting only - this means they must be installed within the window recess and cannot be mounted outside or as an exact fit like other blackout blinds.
  • Your window recess should be ‘square’ - meaning the walls and sill need to be relatively straight. A small discrepancy (up to 15mm) is fine, but anything more could affect the fit and the overall blackout effect. To check the squareness of your recess, measure diagonally from the top left to the bottom right and compare it with the opposite diagonal measurement. If the difference exceeds 15mm, get in touch with us before ordering, and we’ll help you find the best blackout solution for your space.
  • The effectiveness of our Ultra Blackout blinds relies on the frame and foam strips sitting flush against the walls of your recess, therefore they aren’t suitable for recesses with angled walls.

The best rooms for Ultra Blackout blinds

Ultra Blackout blinds are great for any space where you need total darkness.

Bedrooms

A pitch-black room = better sleep. If you're looking for ultra blackout blinds for your bedroom, look no further. Light disrupts our circadian rhythms, making it harder to fall (and stay) asleep. Ultra Blackout blinds block out morning sunlight, streetlights, and even car headlights, so you won’t be waking up before your alarm. Plus, the thermal fabric helps regulate bedroom temperature, keeping it cool in summer and cosy in winter—so you can sleep comfortably all year round.

Home cinemas or media rooms

For that true cinema experience, you need complete darkness. Ultra Blackout blinds are perfect for home cinemas as they eliminate glare on your screen, so you can enjoy movies or gaming whatever time of day or year. The honeycomb fabric also helps dampen outside noise, giving you that immersive, theatre-like experience at home.

Nurseries

Babies and toddlers need their sleep (and let’s be honest, so do parents!). Ultra Blackout blinds are the best bet for nurseries, keeping them dark during daytime naps and bedtime routines, no matter the season. Plus, their cordless design makes them a safe choice for little ones, so they're great for playrooms too. The honeycomb pleated fabric also traps air, so your little one can stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter with ultra blackout blinds.

Ultra Blackout blinds: Measuring and Fitting Guides

To make sure you get complete darkness with our total blackout blinds, measuring accurately is key so the blinds fit snug within the window recess. Read our guides below and get the perfect fit.

How to measure for Ultra Blackout blinds

  • Measure the width and drop inside the recess at three points (top/middle/bottom for width, left/centre/right for drop).
  • Measure to the nearest millimetre and use the smallest width and drop measurement to place your order - we'll make a slight deduction to the measurements you provide to ensure a snug fit in your recess.
  • Check the squareness of your recess by measuring diagonally from corner to corner. If the difference is over 15mm, get in touch before ordering!

Checkout our Ultra Blackout Blinds Measuring Guide for in-depth, step-by-step instructions!

How to fit Ultra Blackout blinds

  • Assemble the frame and place it in the recess, at least 50mm from the window to reduce thermal build-up.
  • Use a spirit level to check it's straight, then mark the drill holes.
  • Remove the frame, drill the holes, insert rawl plugs, then screw the frame into place.
  • If needed, apply the foam strips behind the frame to block any tiny gaps for a perfect blackout effect.
