Working out where to start and how to put your stamp onto the space is something many of us can find challenging, while we’re so eager to make our new house a home it’s crucial to take it all in, embrace your space. Careful planning will save you time and money and leave you with a home that reflects your style perfectly.

Here are some top Interior Design tips for new homeowners:

1.

Consider the long term plan. It is certainly not premature to consider any plans for extensions or long term layout plans before you have laid out your belongings. It is so much easier to see your space and the options for layout and use whilst it is empty. Don’t forget to refer to your estate agent floorplans for help with this. You can even draw on different layout options to plan your furniture and accessories.

2.

Spend time in each room at different times of day and night to understand how the light moves around the space. This will help with lighting choices and layout, as well as deciding on window coverings. Is a blackout blind required in your living room, or will softer sheers work? Perhaps you need to layer up your window dressings to ensure you can have privacy during the daytime.

3.

Create a vision board for your home. Gather together images that evoke a feeling and a vibe that you are drawn to. Don’t focus on individual items at this stage, but instead focus on colours and images that bring you joy. This vision board can evolve over time and give you somewhere to refer back to when you need some inspiration and to keep you on track with an overall scheme for your new home.

4.

Paint is always a good place to start, particularly if your new home has a distinctive décor style from the previous owners. Often a mist coat of white paint throughout will help you with your visualisation and planning.

5.

Do not be swayed by trends, consider the patterns and textures that appeal to you and that have longevity. If you are swayed by the hottest Instagram or Pinterest trends then limit your purchases to accessories that can be easily changed like soft furnishings, cushions, blankets, art prints and roller blinds.

6.

If you are considering zoning or diving space in your home, you could trial the idea with softer partitions using curtains.

7.

Don’t be afraid to tackle some simple DIY projects like filling holes left by previous owners, or a small upholstery project in the form of a feature headboard or footstool is fun, you could quickly cosy up your space by hanging some new curtains or blinds.

8.

Flooring is a big game changer when deciding on décor, so make sure you have appropriate flooring for each area. Bear in mind the traffic in each room, the likelihood of shoes being worn, the warmth of the space and the requirement for any waterproof or resistant surfaces.

9.

Interior Designers use lighting plans and often employ the services of a lighting designer and whilst this is not within most new homeowner’s budget do not overlook the power of well-considered lighting. A well-lit home combines overhead functional lighting with ambient and task lighting each space should have all of these sources of light, but nothing beats natural light.

10.

The direction your new home faces is not just significant in terms of your garden but also impacts the natural light and therefore dictates window dressings, colour choices and even the placement of your TV! If you have a north facing room you will want to encourage as much light as possible into your home so keep window dressings minimal – a roller or roman blind would be a great option. Layer your window with dress curtains that frame the window but will not obstruct the light. By contrast, a south facing room will have the opposite challenge of keeping the heat of the sunlight out on hot days or the glare away from afternoon movie sessions! You could use some day/night blinds or wooden venetians to allow you to control the light in your room throughout the day.
