Congrats! You’re planning to prepare your home for a baby, how exciting. Children are the main source of happiness for parents and carers, those little bundles of joy bring so much laughter and love to our homes. But being a parent comes with lots of worry and sleepless nights. But don’t worry too much, we’re here with some expert tips on how to child-proof your home on a budget too, win, win!

It’s difficult to know where to start when it comes to looking for possible risk factors in the home. Try putting yourself in your little one's shoes, what could be in reach of that curious little crawler? Let’s start with the glaringly obvious ones and make our way to the ones that most parents tend to forget about, like child-safe blinds.

Cover Your Plug Sockets

This is the first thing many of us parents consider when we’re welcoming a little one into our home for the first time is plug sockets. Those little fingers that tend to get everywhere they’re not supposed to. So be sure to cover the little electric holes that can be extremely dangerous in the wrong situation. Opt for a difficult-to-remove solution that surrounds the full socket to be extra secure. Even when there are plugs in the socket, you aren’t in the safety zone just yet, toddlers and young children can easily remove a plug. So be sure to cover even the plugs that are in use.

Secure Your Furniture

There are a couple of risk factors when it comes to furniture safety for children and toddlers. Sharp corners are a big one, toddlers are often the perfect height for catching their heads on a lot of home appliances. Eliminate those sharp corners for a reasonable price with corner protectors from Amazon and protect your little one from bumping into those sharp edges and getting hurt.

As your babies grow into toddlers, and they’re becoming more adventurous, they will try pulling themselves up onto furniture as curiosity gets the better of them. Be sure to secure any freestanding furniture like wardrobes and book stands to ensure there is no danger of them toppling over. Anti-tip brackets can be found at most local DIY stores and on Amazon

Cupboards and drawers will become like a treasure chest to those cheeky little wanderers, so secure all doors and remove any dangerous items from lower storage spaces to ensure safety. This can be done using safety catches, which are also available on Amazon.

Stair Gates

As soon as your little one is at that stage of adventure, be sure to add safety features to potential danger zones like stairs, adding a child safety gate to lock off those areas will keep your little one from wandering into unsafe territory.

Blocking access to the stairs is something that ultimately needs to be done until your child is confident in walking up and down the stairs on their own. Baby gates are a great option for zoning off spaces and creating safe spaces for those little legs.

Secure Your Windows

Windows are often forgotten about when it comes to baby-proofing your home, but they’re actually the cause of many accidents in the UK. As mentioned, when the little ones become more mobile they often like to explore areas that they aren't yet familiar with, and the big wide world is something that can seem exciting.

Child Approved Blinds

As members of the British Blinds and Shutters Association, all our blinds comply with the BBSA’s strict guidelines regarding child safety and are tested to meet the regulations outlined in the British and European safety standards EN 13120:2009 + A1:2014. The BBSA is a British-only trade association representing companies that manufacture and supply interior and exterior blinds, awnings, security grills and shutters. The Association has always taken a leading role in encouraging the highest possible standards of product, service and safety.

As part of our compliance with these regulations and to make sure that our blinds are out of reach of children, all the chains and cords provided with our products will be made at a maximum length of one metre.

If a child or vulnerable person is likely to be using the room where the blind is installed, you MUST fit the safety device we provide in order to tie up the pull cord safely out of the way of children, vulnerable persons and pets.

Even when the safety device is fitted, we recommend that you move beds, cots and furniture away from any window. For more information, visit Makeitsafe.org.uk
