How to Achieve a Cottage Vibe

Tips

Whether you live in an actual cottage or would just like to add a cottage look and feel to your home, getting that look just right can seem tricky. Here are a few simple tricks to get that cottage vibe anywhere in your home:

Include plenty of wood

Include as much wood as possible in the room. Ensure furniture is wooden, and certainly not plastic, and keep as much wood in its natural state as possible. Even stretch to the floorboards if possible – if there are floorboards already there, make the most of them by sanding them down and staining them. If there aren’t, and you can afford to spend some money, consider having some put in. Otherwise, go for a neutral carpet with a woollen feel.

Avoid newness

When it comes to choosing your furniture, we’ve stressed above that wooden is best, but it also pays to think antique as much as possible. Antique furniture can be bought at bargain prices and there’s just no faking vintage when it isn’t there. You may find furniture that’s perfect as it is, or it may need a good clean, or it may even need sanding down and either staining or painting. It all depends how up for a bit of DIY you are!

Keep the walls neutral

A classic cottage look is wooden floorboards and cream or off-white walls. Some floral or country wallpapers can work too, but plain walls are cheap and easy to achieve, as well as being versatile. So, no feature walls or bold paint colours! And, of course, the same goes for your ceiling!

Emphasise quirks

If your house, true cottage or not, has any quirks that make it stand out from the crowd, emphasise them – don’t hide them away! You might have a cute cubbyhole with no apparent purpose, a beautiful deep window seat, a built-in cupboard, or a slanted ceiling. Never disguise these things and always help to accentuate them as much as possible.
