3 Ways to Transform Your Downstairs Cloakroom

With most of us focusing our home décor energies on the rooms that we use (and the guests see) most, such as the kitchen and living room, there are certain rooms in the home that often get neglected. The upstairs landing is one, the utility room is another. And the downstairs toilet is most certainly a biggie. This room is always small, often cold, and almost never appealing. But wouldn’t it be nice if the warm and welcoming décor of the rest of your home were to stretch to this extra room? Many will agree but it can be hard to know what to do with such a tiny, functional room. Here are a few tips:

1. Go bold

No matter what your décor expertise may be, you’ll be hard-pressed to make a teeny toilet room with barely enough room to turn around, let alone swing a cat, feel like a grand ballroom. So quit trying to make it feel bigger with light, plain walls and embrace the teensiness of this room by creating drama instead. Go for bold, statement wallpaper on at least one wall – and all four if you dare! For the sake of being able to see, avoiding dark blacks and purples might be wise, but otherwise, go wild! Why not?

2. Supersize it

If you’ve got a sink, you’ll want a mirror. And if you’re going to have a mirror, along with bold, dramatic walls, why not go oversized? It will add to the sense of drama that you’re trying to convey, as well as reflecting light. Large mirrors in small rooms can often add a sort of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ feel, which is always interesting.

3. Make a statement

As if your bold walls and giant mirror weren’t statement enough, adding some interesting wall art can add real interest to a room. Plaques with toilet rules or other humorous lines are cute and quirky, and will add some real depth to the room. Plus…well, they’re funny! And we all need to laugh!
