11 Ways to Liven Up Your Stairs

Stairs can be a little uninspiring when it comes to decorating ideas. After all, you don’t want to be too ‘out there’ (or do you?), but you don’t want to stick to the usual tricks either. Well, there are definitely things you can do to brighten up the journey upstairs that fall very definitively in the ‘in between’ category. Perfect!

 

1. Statement Carpet – If you love bold prints but aren’t quite brave enough yet to try them on a large area, then consider a statement carpet just for the stairs and landing.

2. Lighting – We all having lighting in the hallway downstairs, and in the landing upstairs, but how about adding some on the wall going up the stairs?

3. Include Storage – Turn your stairs into a handy storage space by turning those steps into drawers!

4. Bold Wallpaper – Nothing can make the stairwell more interesting like some seriously characterful wallpaper. Choose your favourite pattern and get it on those walls!

5. Gallery Wall – Where better to display your family photos then in a beautiful gallery wall leading all the way upstairs?

6. Paint the Stairs – Most of us have either carpeted stairs or natural wooden stairs, but if you love colour, you could always paint your wooden stairs!

 

 

7. Unique Handrail – Who said handrails have to be wooden? Try something different, like some thick, sturdy rope, to add something unique to the space. Make sure it’s safe!

 

 

8. Archway – Using an archway to frame the entrance to the stairway, either at the bottom or the top, can add a real sense of grandeur.

 

 

9. Go Dark – Make your stairwell a place of real drama by opting for a dark, striking colour scheme. Go on, be brave!

 

 

10. Paint the Bannisters – Bannisters don’t have to be all white or all wood, or even match the steps at all! Liven them up with an inventive colour scheme.

 

 

11. Hang a Piece of Art – Make the journey up the stairs worth the wait by hanging a stunning piece of statement art right at the top (and even at the bottom too!).
