Making your house a home is all about adding the little touches that make you feel at ease and relaxed the moment you put your key in the door. A quick Google search will throw up more ideas and sources of inspiration than you can think about in a lifetime. To make things a little easier, take a look at our quick style guide to get an introduction to four of the most popular styles at the moment.

1. Rustic

We’re huge fans of the rustic world of decor. Picture big thick chunks of wood for your furniture and plenty of hessian wherever you can fit it in. Countryside prints are a certainty to be found hanging on your walls, and an open fire or log burner are great centrepieces for the living room.

2. Vintage

Vintage is like rustic, but with some contemporary twists. You know those old-meets-modern signs with logos and dates on them? That’s the epitome of vintage and certainly something you’ll see a lot of. Lighting is really important and light boards and fairy lights are a great way to add a uniquely vintage ambience in those transitory spaces like the hallway or the upstairs landing.

3. Farmhouse

Farmhouse is really where this class of decor styles all began. By going back to basics and embracing the aesthetics of authentic country living you can create your own farmhouse style in any room you please. Simple light colours paired with exposed brickwork are a great way of creating a farmhouse feature wall. Little additions like a metal bucket for kindling and plenty of other metalwork and woodwork around the home will give your decor that unique farmhouse style you’ve been looking for.

4. Shabby chic

Shabby Chic can be a difficult look to get right. Not enough and your decor can look messy, too much and it will just look…too much. The secret is not to give the shabby touch to everything. Pick wooden furniture or flooring that’s big enough to dominate a room, but don’t do every single item otherwise it can be overpowering. Experiment and you’ll be able to find the perfect balance between your shabby touches and the modern accessories every home needs.
