Standard Roman blind measuring tips
- If your recess depth is 60mm or less, or the window opens inwards, an exact (face) fit is usually best.
- For recesses deeper than 60mm, choosing a recess or exact fit is mostly down to personal preference.
- When measuring inside the recess, always check for obstructions such as tiles or picture rails and measure between them to achieve a neat, snug fit.
Motorised Roman blind measuring tips
- Motorised Roman blinds require additional recess depth to accommodate the headrail, motor and battery.
- For a recess fit, allow a minimum depth of 90mm.
- If recess space is limited or there are obstructions such as window handles or vents, a face fix is recommended for smooth operation.

What’s the difference between recess and exact?
Choose Recess if fitting inside the window opening, or Exact if fitting outside on the wall. See our measuring guide if you’re unsure.
Can motorised Roman blinds be fitted inside or outside the recess?
Yes. Motorised Roman blinds can be fitted either inside the window recess or outside on the wall or ceiling. Simply select Recess or Exact when ordering.
How are motorised Roman blinds operated?
Motorised Roman blinds are operated using a wireless remote control, allowing you to raise, lower, and stop the blind smoothly at the touch of a button.
Do motorised Roman blinds need wiring?
No. Motorised Roman blinds are battery powered, so there’s no need for mains wiring, making installation simple and hassle-free.
How often does the motor battery need charging?
The rechargeable battery typically lasts around 6 months on average, depending on usage. Recharging is quick and straightforward.
Which rooms are suitable for Roman blinds?
Roman blinds bring a touch of luxury to bedrooms and living rooms, but their soft fabrics aren’t ideal for kitchens or bathrooms. For these spaces, see our recommended bathroom blinds.
Are screws and plugs needed for fitting?
We provide the brackets, but not screws or rawl plugs. Most fittings work well with decent rawl plugs and 15–25mm self-tapping screws.

Yes, you can buy selected fabric by the metre — please view our range here.
How accurate are the fabric images?
Our imagery team works to match fabrics as closely as possible, but textures and screen settings can vary — so we recommend ordering FREE SAMPLES of your favourite designs.
